The TV Blob Box
The TV Blob is this tiny box that turns your standard television into one featured with internet capability. It’s from an Italian company working with CE manufacturers to bring what’s called TV 3.0 into the household. With this Blob box and a broadband connection, your television is connected to the internet with ease. You can use several web features and services like YouTube and Facebook, accessing them on your TV screen. Of course, you do all this using your remote control as the navigator.
The box features 160GB hard drive capacity.
The package includes the following:
- twin digital TV tuners
- direct streaming from a PC
- 1080p picture quality via an HDMI port
- an Ethernet connection (with optional Wi-Fi key)
- support for BitTorrent, FTP/HTTP sites
- support for podcasting
Every now and then, the box will trigger software updates in the internet gallery so the owners can maximize its features.
It’s currently available in the European market for now but there are plans to obtain software licensing for this to be distributed in the US. The box’s price range is $500.00.
It’s a box
But not just any box.
TVBLOB is working with CE manufacturers to bring a new range of Internet set-top box to market. There will be some slight variations between feature sets (so please check the model details!), but essentially they will all enable you to do a whole lot more with your standard TV.
Why? Most set-top boxes that you may have seen in the market were created primarily to receive content, however, the TVBLOB Media Center was designed to both send and receive content in real time. There’s huge difference.
In order for you to have have true TV interactivity in real-time that both makes sense and feels natural (e.g., particularly for TV video communications), data coming to and going from your box to another must be digitally encoded and decoded on the fly (i.e., in layman’s terms, disassembled in tiny bits and reassembled really quickly in the correct order, without losing bits in between).
